EMDR

I just wanted to let you know that I am now fully trained and qualified as an eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapist. I am using EMDR if appropriate as a part of therapy with clients who want to engage with it. EMDR is a really effective way of treating trauma. It works quite differently to normal therapy and can be a quicker approach to overcoming trauma.

It uses the brains natural self-healing through using eye movements or bidirectional movement to quieten the amygdala, allowing the brain to process traumatic material.

This is how rapid eye movement (REM) sleep works to process the events of the day when we are sleeping. However if we experience something out of the ordinary and you are traumatised by an overwhelming event e.g. a car accident or by being repeatedly subjected to distress e.g. childhood neglect, your natural coping mechanism can become overloaded. We can end up re-experiencing these trauma memories as they are unprocessed and this can have a negative impact on our mental health.

EMDR can also be used effectively to overcome phobias, anxiety and depression,

Please do contact me if you would like to discuss EMDR further.
